robertoRoberto Conte

Veterinary Care Compounding; Potentials and opportunities

Roberto is a 2004 graduate of The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of British Columbia. He has been a compounding pharmacist for over 8 years and currently manages the Pharmasave Compounding Pharmacy in West Vancouver. Roberto is also a consultant for the MEDISCA Network and is involved in both non-sterile and sterile training programs. His program explores the potential for business development within the veterinary care compounding marketplace. It briefly looks at current regulatory guidelines exposing the potential opportunities for the young and inspired future pharmacist. The opportunities within veterinary care compounding are revealed; companion animals, the exotic, the large and the small. Each sub-category exposes unique specialty areas filled with the promise of personal and professional growth. Clinical case studies are incorporated into the session offering the future pharmacist with professional challenge and a bit of wisdom for the future.

Denison

Sebastian Denison

Alternatives to the typical paths of hospital and community pharmacy: the future of compounding in the field of pharmacy and its importance

Mr. Denison is an experienced compounding expert who currently works as a pharmacy consultant for PCCA (Professional Compounding Centers of America). Mr. Denison’s past experiences include working at Northmount Pharmacy in North Vancouver for 11 years where he specialized in veterinary, pain and sports compounding practice. He also assisted the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic/ Paralympic Games as the Manager of Pharmacy Operations. At PDW 2014, Mr. Denison will be discussing the role of compounding in pharmacy practice.

Incorporating relevant evidence into shared-informed decision making for common conditions seen in primary care

Dr. James McCormack has extensive experience working with health professionals and consumers concerning the rational use of medication. Dr. McCormack advocates for informed decision making using evidence-based data and rational therapeutic principles, publishing over 100 articles in the area of rational drug therapy. At PDW 2014, Dr. McCormack will focus on the dynamics of implementing evidence in clinical practice.

How I transformed a drug distribution pharmacy into a clinical pharmacy entailing redesign of the pharmacy environment

John Shaske is the owner of a clinical pharmacy dedicating his practice to achieving the best pharmaceutical outcomes for patients. Mr. Shaske was successful in branding his pharmacy as a source of professional advice and a go-to option in resolving health care issues; as a strong advocate for patient-centered care, he became a leading innovator of the pharmacy profession by establishing community pharmacists as reliable clinicians. Mr. Shaske will be sharing his experiences on transforming his practice, and how he maintained financial sustainability in this process.

The conflict of being a healthcare professional and engaging in the business aspect of pharmaceuticals: how this conflict can be negotiated so that professional duty is not compromised and the industry’s obligation to stockholders and society are met

Dr. Kluge is a professor of philosophy at the University of Victoria who served as a consultant to Health Canada. Dr. Kluge assisted the Canadian Medical Association in writing the CMA Guidelines for the relationship between physicians and the pharmaceutical industry; at PDW 2014, Dr. Kluge’s breakout session will focus on the balance between professional obligation and business practice.

 

carrDr. Roxanne Carr

Antimicrobial resistance : Can we stop the wave before it crashes ashore

Dr. Carr is the Supervisor of Clinical Pharmacy Critical Care Services with Lower Mainland Pharmacy Services and provides clinical pharmacy services to Pediatric Critical Care Program at the Children’s and Women’s Health Centre of British Columbia.  She is also cross appointed as an Assistant Professor, part-time, with the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of British Columbia (UBC). She received a Bachelor of Science degree from McGill University and a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from UBC and completed a Canadian Hospital Pharmacy Residency Program at the Vancouver General Hospital. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (PharmD) from UBC and completed a two-year post-doctoral research fellowship in Pediatric Pharmacotherapy with Dr. Milap Nahata at The Ohio State University.

Antimicrobial resistance is a global problem with complex causes and serious repercussions for patients and health care providers.  This session will discuss current issues in antimicrobial resistance and strategies to mitigate or decrease the risk of developing multidrug resistant infections (emergence and spread of multidrug resistant organisms) .

Marie Rocchi and Donna Pipa

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAMarie Rocchi has been at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto since 1999, when she developed what is now the International Pharmacy Graduate Program. She has been teaching undergraduate pharmacy students since 2008, and has been responsible for developing and teaching a range of courses, including Health Systems, Informatics, Medication Therapy Management, and Early Practice Experience.  Her area of research and practice is technology enabled education. She was responsible for the development and delivery of an inter-professional online course for internationally educated healthcare professionals (Orientation to the Canadian Healthcare System, Culture and Context), and is the instructional designer for a Defence Canada grant to train health, psychosocial and communication first responders for CBRNE (chemical, biological, radio-nuclear and explosive) events.

 

donnaDonna Pipa, B.Sc.Pharm, FCSHP, is Project Manager for the AFPC – Canada Health Infoway initiative aimed at developing an on-line educational program for optimizing the use of pharmacy information and information technology.  She is a licensed pharmacist in Alberta with considerable experience in informatics. Donna has been involved with Alberta’s electronic health record (EHR) initiative for over 10 years, including direct involvement in assisting pharmacists, physicians and other health professionals with implementation of the EHR.  She has been recognized for her expertise by being appointed to numerous provincial and national committees relating to informatics. Prior to her work in the area of informatics, she was the Director of Pharmacy at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, then Pharmacy Operations Manager for Pediatrics within the Calgary region. Donna has also been professionally active with associations and colleges at the provincial and national levels.

 

Janet Cooper

Pharmacist Prescribing & Expanded Scope of Practice Across Canada:
Where we’ve come from, where we’re at and where we’re going

We’ve come a long way! Over the past 10 years, the profession of pharmacy has changed dramatically and pharmacists are doing more for patients than ever before. This session will give a cross-Canada checkup on expanded scope of practice. We’ll take a quick tour of each province to find out what activities pharmacists are performing, examine what’s working where and why and consider how we can elevate the standard of practice to a common level. We’ll pay particular attention to the issue of pharmacist prescribing and how it is being implemented across Canada.
Janet Cooper is a graduate of Dalhousie University’s College of Pharmacy and then completed a hospital pharmacy residency in Halifax. She has worked for the Canadian Pharmacists Association for the past twenty years and is currently the Senior Director of Professional & Membership Affairs.

William Chung

Ownership and the Structure of Running a Pharmacy

William Chung is Senior Vice President of Pharmacy at Rexall.  He is responsible for both Retail and Specialty Pharmacy operations, procurement, systems and analytics, professional affairs, and business development.  For the past 22 years, Mr. Chung has been involved in driving growth, development and performance of health, life science, and retail companies including Shoppers Drug Mart, Jean Coutu Group, and MDS Inc.  At these companies, he has held progressively senior management positions in operations, corporate development, mergers and acquisitions, and strategy.  Mr. Chung has a Bachelors of Science in Pharmacy, a Masters of Business Administration, and holds a Chartered Business Valuator designation.
